Ruthberg & Team Pioneer Computer Vision Technique for Sinus Surgery

UW Oto resident Dr. Jeremy Ruthberg (R3) is leading an exciting research effort to revolutionize how image navigation works within sinus and skull base surgery.  The multi-disciplinary team applies advanced computer vision techniques to construct an accurate surgical scene, which allows them to display for the surgeon intraoperative change on the CT, in real-time. Team members are Eric Seibel, PhD, professor in Mechanical Engineering, and UW Oto-HNS faculty members Waleed Abuzeid, MD, and Randall Bly, MD, with graduate students Nicole Gunderson and Pearson Chen and UW medical student Mahdi Alighezi contributing. The group has a provisional patent on their novel technique and has published a pilot study. They are currently testing the technology on a broader scale, as well as submitting an NIH R01 proposal.
