Biography

Ian M. Humphreys, DO FARS, joined the University of Washington Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery in 2015. Currently he is an associate professor within the department and director of the division of rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery. He has specialized training and expertise in treating inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses (e.g., sinusitis), smell disorders, nose bleeds, nasal breathing, rhinitis, sinonasal tumors (benign and malignant), CSF leaks, and disorders affecting the skull base. Dr. Humphreys is also the director of the neurorhinology and advanced sinus surgery fellowship at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake and director of the UW Otolaryngology medical student clerkship program.

Dr Humphreys attended the University of Pittsburgh, then performed basic and translational research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He earned his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated summa cum laude with Psi Sigma Alpha distinction. He completed a residency in otolaryngology- head and neck surgery at Michigan State University's Detroit Medical Center campus in Detroit where he also served as chief resident.  Following residency, he completed a prestigious fellowship in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at Stanford University under the direction of world-renowned rhinologist Peter Hwang, MD.

Dr Humphreys is originally from Pennsylvania and is excited to call Washington home. He has a passion for humanitarian medical care and has served in locations such as the American Southwest, Nigeria, and Cambodia. He is married with two children. He currently is an Ironman Triathlete and competes in races regionally and nationally. He also enjoys mountaineering and international travel.

Awards and Honors

Dr Humphreys received over 10 scholarship awards during medical school for academic excellence, stewardship, and merit. He graduated medical school Summa Cum Laude with Psi Sigma Alpha Distinction. During residency he received two grants for Humanitarian Service projects abroad. In 2014, he was awarded the Ig Noble Prize in Medicine and in 2018, 2019, and 2020 he was recognized as a Seattle Met Top Doc. In 2020 he was awarded WWAMI Pro Recognition for his commitment to excellence in medical student service. He currently serves on numerous committees within several national organizations including the American Rhinologic Society and is the Director of Rhinology Education of the American Osteopathic College of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery Education Committee.

Clinical Interests

Dr Humphreys has specialized training and expertise in the treatment of chronic inflammatory disorders of the nose and sinuses (e.g., sinusitis), rhinitis, nasal obstruction, nose bleeds, smell disorders, CSF leak, sinonasal tumors that are both benign and cancerous, as well as diseases affecting the skull base. He has expertise using minimally invasive and in-office techniques including balloon sinuplasty, radiofrequency turbinate reduction, and cryoablation treatments for rhinitis. Importantly, he is trained both as a Rhinologist and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgeon and is a member of the University of Washington Skull Base Team. He utilizes cutting edge technologies and techniques in the management of these disorders and partners closely with Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, and Allergists/Immunologists to provide wholistic care.

Research Focus

Dr Humphreys research interests are centered within the study of sinus cancers as well as invasive fungal infections of the nose and sinuses. He collaborates with institutions across the country in these efforts and he currently leads several research studies in these areas. Dr Humphreys is also a member of the University of Washington BioRobotics Laboratory and studies novel navigation technologies in sinus and skull base surgery.
