Biography

Dr. Barber's practice is dedicated to surgery for benign and cancerous head and neck tumors as well as facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. She strives to create active partnerships with her patients to achieve the best possible outcomes. 

Dr. Barber completed her M.D. and surgical residency training at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. She also completed a Master of Surgical Science at the University of Oxford for her dissertation work in peripheral nerve regeneration in head and neck cancer patients. She then went on to complete a fellowship in advanced head and neck cancer surgery and microvascular reconstruction at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Barber has recent been awarded a University of Washington CARES Award for the quality of her care of patients in 2023. She was also nominated for the NCCN Young Investigator Award by Fred Hutch Cancer Center for her microbiome in oral cavity cancer risk work. She has been awarded the Driftwood Award in Surgical Teaching twice in 2020 and 2021. She has been presented with multiple research awards over the years, including multiple placements in the National Poliquin Research Competition, the Nilay Patel Memorial Award during her studies at the University of Oxford, and the CSOHNS Fellowship Award. Dr. Barber has given over 50 national and international podium presentations and has over 50 peer-reviewed publications pertaining to the treatment and care of head and neck cancer patients.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Barber's clinical interests include head and neck cancer surgery (including oral, oropharyngeal, laryngeal, hypopharyngeal cancers), robotic surgery, and salivary and thyroid/parathyroid surgery. She has a special interest in reconstructive surgery for aerodigestive tract and skin cancers. She sits on multiple national committees dedicated to improving care for patients with mucosal malignancies.

Dr. Barber has research interests in establishing quality surgical metrics in head and neck cancer surgery, investigating etiopathologies for early-onset and non-smoking oral cavity cancer, and investigating the role that diet plays in head and neck cancer risk.
